Jose Mourinho has bagged some incredible players since he moved to Man Utd. Though only some of them have worked out, on paper the Red Devils arguably have the best team in England.
From Alexis Sanchez to Romelu Lukaku to Paul Pogba, Jose Mourinho has no shortage of talent to choose from.
Many of his moves over the years have come with mixed success, however, with Alexis Sanchez’s move to Old Trafford in January so far not proving to be Man Utd’s smartest deal.
Still, Mourinho doesn’t appear to be giving up hope on his ability to identify good targets, with another major move in the offing. According to the Mirror, West Ham man Marko Arnautovic is apparently a £50 million target for the Red Devils.
Man Utd evidently have issues going forward, and Arnautovic is clearly viewed by the manager as the ideal solution. However, he’d be wise to think twice about a move for the Austrian – as it’s hard to see this one working out.
After all, though he’s enjoyed a good spell in London, Arnautovic is hardly one of England’s best players. He’s bagged 5 goals this season, which is a good record, but it’s hardly the best. In fact, it’s the same number as Alvaro Morata, who is widely regarded as one of the worst forwards currently at a top English team. Arnautovic is a goalscorer, make no mistake, but he’s hardly taken the league by storm this season.
Mourinho must also consider the longevity of a move for him. He’s already 29-years-old, and as we’ve seen with Alexis Sanchez, a career can go downhill fast at that age. At best, he’s only got a few years left at the highest level, and for £50 million? That just doesn’t seem to make financial sense.
From the outside, this just looks like Mourinho is panicking about a lack of options, and he’s chosen perhaps the most available above-average solution. At the highest level, though, that tactic doesn’t work out – and this could seriously backfire.
